Mrs. Mary Brisco Dies at Home
Funeral Services were held May 11th (1953) at the Basin for Mary Elizabeth Blackwood Briscoe, affectionately known as 'Aunt Lizzie' or Granny Brisco aged Newton County resident who died Saturday May 9th. She was born October 11, 1864 a daughter of Rachel Owens and Chesterfield Blackwood on Boston Mountain in Johnson Co., Ark. She spent her entire life in Arkansas.

A story in the Headlight last October by Edith Elzy Pettit relates to the celebration of 'Aunt Lizzie's' 88th birthday. She made her home with her grandson Verlin Brisco and his wife Hester at Marble Falls. On the Sunday when her 88th birthday was observed she was seated in her comfortable rocking chair receiving her guests, who arrived before noon, bringing presents and baskets of food for the birthday dinner.

In an interview with Mrs. Pettit, Mrs. Briscoe said 'A fortune teller told me twice, I would live to be 100 and Grandmother Owens was 106 yrs of age when she died.'

Aunt Lizzie was known as the 'doctor' for she was a midwife and had a record of delivering over 1,000 babies. She always rode her horse all over Osage and Possum Trot when she visited her patients. She was never known to refuse day or night to go to a patient.

Survivors include four sons, Berry Briscoe of Hill Top, Mart and Marion Briscoe of Marble Falls, and Bill Brisco of North Carolina; one daughter Bessie Harp of Marble Falls and one sister Adeline Meadows of Russellville, 19 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.

The Rev. C. A. Simpson conducted the funeral service and interment was made in Shaddox Cemetery, following a short graveside service. The L.C. Holt Funeral Home of Harrison was in charge.
