Caryl A. Backus was born Feb. 25, 1927, in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Clare Backus and May Backus.
He retired from Oldsmobile in 1979 after 30 years of service as a mechanic in experimental engineering. He was a World War II veteran,
having served in the U.S. Army as staff sergeant for the motor pool in Germany. He received the Army of Occupation medal in the European
Middle Eastern Campaign and the World War II Victory medal. He was a member of VFW Post #6034.
He married Patricia George Dec. 20, 1947.
He was survived by one daughter, Anita (Thomas) Pepper of Jackson; one son, Daniel (Laurie) of Charlotte; three brothers, Richard of West
Melbourne, Fla., Neil of Winter Springs, Fla., and Larry of Bacliff, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia in 1995 and one brother, Wayne Backus in 1995.
Services were held at Potterville United Methodist Church with Pastor Paul Bailey and the Rev. Jeffrey Nunham officiating. Interment at the Benton Township Cemetery.
