JACK DOYLE BOWERS, 75, died peacefully June 11, 2001, at his home in Palmer surrounded by his family. A service was held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mile 2.2 Palmer-Wasilla Highway, with the Rev. Kathryn Franzenburg officiating. Interment was at Palmer Pioneer Cemetery.
Mr. Bowers was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Dennison, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1953. He began his Alaska residency in 1967, residing in Clear until 1974 and Palmer until his death. He had been employed as a satellite-tracking technician at Clear Air Force Base from 1967 until his retirement in 1980. His family stated: ''Jack found beauty in each day and great joy in the simplest of pleasures. He loved people and treasured his friends and family. He touched the lives of many people with his generous heart.''
Mr. Bowers is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline Briggs; son-in-law, Tommy Joe Briggs; and grandchildren, Joshua Briggs and Tawni Briggs, all of Palmer. Memorial donations my be made to Hospice of Mat-Su, 3051 E. Palmer-Wasilla Highway, Wasilla, AK 99654-7234. Arrangements were by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory of Wasilla.
In 1938, Jack and his sister Oval, accompanied their mother and step-father, Samuel Henry Puffer, on a move from Michigan to "out west". In Plainview, TX, they were abandoned by their step-father, as he continued west to California. He left them with $10 and two old army blankets. His mother, sister, and 5 step-brothers/sisters began to hike/hitch back to their home in Michigan. They stopped to work (picking cotton) along the way to earn money for food and shelter.
