She was the mother of 1 young son, Tommy. It is not known whether Herschel adopted Lena's son or not, but Tommy used the surname Scoggins.
Herschel was a driver for a dairy in Alton, Madison County, Illinois. He later worked for Olin Corporation in East Alton. The family lived in Cottage Hills, Illinois for many years.
Lena passed away in 1981.
Later in life, Herschel moved to Creal Springs, Illinois. He died at Marion Memorial Hospital in Williamson County. At the time of his death, he was 73 years, 8 months and 27 days old.
He was survived by nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Herschel was preceded in death by his mother and father; 1 son, Tommy; 3 brothers, Hubert Scoggins and Harold Scoggins, and Emmett Scoggins, who died in infancy; and 2 sisters, Ethel Hurley and Jessie Henderson.
No visitation was held. Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on the morning of 22 May 1987. Whitnel Funeral Home in Vienna, Illinois was in charge of arrangements.
