William Jackson Smart was a Union Soldier in Arkansas 1st Battery Light Artillary.

He was the son of Laban Smart and Mary Bowen.

William J. Smart, a resident of the state of Washington for the last 32 years passed away this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John B. Dodd, S. 603 Arthur after an illness of twelve weeks.

The deceased came to the state of Washington in 1887 and has resided in the vicinity of Wilbur a great part of the time since then having been engaged in farming. He was a veteran of the civil war and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Mr. Smart is survived by six sons, Joe of Spokane, Charles and George of Montana, Henry of Seattle, Michael of Creston and Fred of Yakima and three daughters - Mrs. John B. Dodd of Spokane, Mrs. John Hastings of Morrow, Ore. and Mrs. E.T. Glasgow of Montana. All the children were present at the time of his death.

A private funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock from Smith & Co's Parlors, the service being conducted by the GAR.
