Robert J. Sibley, 82, of 10 Crescent Rd., a lifelong resident of Winchendon and prominent civic leader and advocate for the elderly, died Saturday, August 2 at home following a brief illness.

Mr. Sibley was born in Winchendon August 13, 1920, son of Roland H. and Ethel M. (Farrell) Sibley and lived here all of his life. He graduated from Murdock High School in Winchendon in 1939. Later that year, on November 25, he married the former Dorothy M. Brow with whom he celebrated nearly sixty-four wonderful years of marriage.

At one time, he was employed with the former G.E. Company of Fitchburg and the former Alaska Freezer Company. He was a custodian for the Winchendon School Department for over twenty years prior to his retirement.

Mr. Sibley was inducted into the Murdock Sports Boosters Hall of Fame and was the only member to earn twelve letters at Murdock. He served his community well by generously offering his time and serving as Past Fire Commissioner in Winchendon, President and Board Member of CEMACA, Past Member of the Housing Authority, Member of the North Worcester County Advisory Board, Chairman of the Republican Town Committee, Chairman of the Council on Aging, Member of the Executive Board of Monatachusett Home Care and Chairman of the St. Laurent Campers Association for over twenty five years. In 1981, 1983 and 1992, he received the Community Service Award and in 1992 received the Community Award from former State Representative Bob Hawke. In 1992 he was distinguished as Outstanding Board Member from the Massachusetts Home Care Association.

He leaves his wife, Dorothy M. (Brow) Sibley; two sons, Ronald R. Sibley of Beaufort, SC and Kevin J. Sibley of Winchendon; four daughters, Betty Jane Blodgett, Mary Lou Johnson, Madeline May and Merri-Jo Sibley Leger, all of Winchendon; one brother, Richard K. Sibley of Virginia; two sisters, Shirley S. Bjorkland of Connecticut and Sandra J. Crusan of Colorado, 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A brother, Roland H. Sibley of California predeceased him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the graveside service in Calvary Cemetery, Winchendon, Saturday, August 9 at 11:30 AM. There are no calling hours. The family has asked that those wishing make contributions in his memory to Montachusett Home Care, 680 Mechanic St., Leominster, MA 01453.
