Fred graduated from the University of Utah and from Temple University School of Medicine.

In addition to pursuing academic goals, he was active in sports beginning in grammar school and continuing into medical school. He excelled in the high jump, broad jump, and low hurdles, setting winning records in many national, state and local meets. Fred played basketball for the University of Utah, serving as Captain of the NCAA's 1944 National Collegiate Basketball Championship Team.

In 1946, he signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Warriors, playing as a starting forward while attending medical school. His professional basketball career was short-lived however due to the demands of medical school.

His second career was as a Physician for the County of Orange in Southern California and he served as a member of the faculty of the University of California, Irvine, Medical School.

He is survived by his wife, Kari; three children, Laurey Zayac (Dr. E. J "Joe") of San Antonio, TX, Sari Latta (Michael) of Sacramento, CA, and Flint Sheffield of Sacramento, CA; seven grandchildren, LCDR Kevin Zayac (Erica) stationed in Bahrain, Whitney Bonner (Bryant) of San Antonio, TX, Dr. Emily Boyd (Colin) of Houston, TX, Ian Latta of San Francisco, CA, Travis, Annie and Chelsea Latta all of Sacramento, CA; and five great grandchildren, Sydney, Zachary and Andrew Bonner, and Benjamin and Bradley Zayac.
