He was born on March 1, 1924, the son of Harley and Pauline (Breininger) Hart in Mark Center, Ohio. He graduated in 1943 from Mark Township and was a graduate of the T. Andrews Barber School, Toledo, Ohio. Herbert was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. He served in four campaigns under General Patton in the 3rd Army, 5th Division. He received the Purple Heart, Silver Star and the Bronze Star.
On August 16, 1946, he was united in marriage with Ellenore Newill. Herbert owned and operated Hart's Barber Shop in Hicksville for 62 years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was head usher for over 30 years and was a council member. In Hicksville, he was a member of the American Legion, Eagles (30+ year life member) and past commander of the VFW. He was a lifetime member and the chaplain of the Sherwood VFW. In Defiance, he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans where he served as chaplain, and was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Society of 5th Division.
He is survived by his wife, Ellenore; two sons, Terry (Catherine) and Bruce (Patricia), both of Hicksville; a daughter, Vicki (Freddie) Taylor of Middlebury, Ind.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Catherine (Patrick) Brubaker of Sun City, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Inez Hart of Phoenix, Ariz.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two grandchildren, Eugene and Chad; and two brothers, Olen and George.
The funeral service will be Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hicksville at 11 a.m. with Rev. David Proctor officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8 p.m. at Smith & Brown Funeral Home in Hicksville and one hour prior to services Friday at the church. Burial will be at Six Corners Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Sherwood VFW Post 5665.
