Sam was born Sveinung Nielsen Støilen, the son of Niels Evensen Hommedrom and Torbjørg Knudsdatter Bygland.

He had ten siblings: Amborg, Bergit, Ejvend, Knut, Anbjørg, Birgit, Gunder, Anne, Rolleif, and Sigrid.

Sam married Anborg Gjermundsdatter Oland on September 19, 1901.

They were the parents of eight children: Bergljot Gelline, Nels, Thilda, Selma, Gunvald, Gunda Ellenora, Esther Alvina, and Edwin Carl Wilhelm.

Sam Nelson, Greenwood Township farmer, and a resident of that community for the past 18 years, died at his home Sunday, December 5th at the age of 54 years. He had been failing in health for the past five years.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon of last week by Rev. Livingston of Clearbrook at the Bethany church. Interment was made in the Bethany Cemetery .
Mr. Nelson was born in Telemarken, Norway, August 4, 1880 and came to the United States in 1902. After residing at Bemidji for two years he homesteaded near Leonard and in 1918 bought his presented farm in Greenwood Township.
Surviving are his wife, and four daughters, Mrs. Oluf Clemenson of Pengilly, Mrs. Ed Bergloff, Chicago, Gunda and Esther Nelson, of Gonvick, and three sons, Gunvald of Crookston and Nils and Edwin of Gonvick. One daughter, Mrs. Anton Lindom, passed away in 1930. Mr. Nelson is also survived by two sisters and three brothers, all of whom with the exception of one brother, reside in Norway. Ed Nelson lives at St. Vincent.
