He was member of Moran Baptist Church. He founded Oak Ridge Tool-Engineering Inc., in 1962 which was the first industry to locate in the City Industrial Park. The Company is still headquartered in Oak Ridge's Commerce Park with offices in Orlando, Fla. Sons Terry and Steve still manage the business, specializing in aerospace, defense and energy related components. After retirement, he started the Mullins Livestock Company in the Bethel community.
He became a private pilot at the age of 66, which was a life-long dream. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and a Honorable Colonel in the U.S. Service Command Airwing Division. He had an airstrip, where he hosted flying events for neighbors and friends. One of his greatest enjoyments, was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary Bryant Mullins; brother, G.C. Mullins; sisters, Charlotte Scarsbrook, Irene Pratt and Mabel Hammons.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Mullins of Clinton; sons, Terry Mullins and wife, Deborah, of Oak Ridge, and Steve Mullins of Clinton; daughters, Pam Mullins of Clinton and Sherry Menefee of Oak Ridge; sisters, Janice Hale of Flatlick, Ky., Pearl Kwasnoski of Mt. Vernon, Ill., Dicey Harper of Mt. Vernon, Ill., and Bobbie Senter of Oak Ridge; brothers, Elster Mullins of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lowell Mullins of Orlando, Fla., and Carl Mullins, Jr. of Oak Ridge; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 11, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with funeral service following in the chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Seeber officiating.
Family and friends will meet Tuesday, May 12, at 2 p.m., at Oak Ridge Memorial Park for graveside services. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of the arrangements.
