Jean Atkinson, 95, of Gothenburg passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg. Services will be conducted at the Banner United Methodist Church on Monday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Janie Freeman officiating. Interment will be at the Peckham Cemetery at Gothenburg. A visitation will take place at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg on Sunday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 8 p.m. with family members present from 2 to 4 p.m.
Atkinson was born Jan. 9, 1919, at Broken Bow, the daughter of Emory and Hazel (Hammond) Cline. She attended country school and graduated from Broken Bow High School, then moved with her family to the Banner Community near Gothenburg.
On April 10, 1940, she was united in marriage to Royal Atkinson at Banner Church. To this union, two children were born. The couple then moved to the original Atkinson family homestead, sharing the home with her husband's grandmother. Jean had resided in the Banner community until moving into Gothenburg later in life. Atkinson was an active mom and farm wife, raising a garden and keeping her yard beautiful, according to family members. She also collected music boxes and angels.
She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, the Union Aide, a 75-year member of the Banner United Methodist Church and Banner United Methodist Women, County Line Extension Club and Hobby Club. She was also a volunteer with the Bloodmobile and the Senior Center. Atkinson was a wonderful cook and took numerous meals to anyone in need, family members said. She loved reading God's Word and going to Bible study and church as well as her Tuesday morning Bible study group. She had recently received a new Bible because her old one was falling apart, a true testament of the Godly woman she was.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Royal Atkinson; her parents, Emory and Hazel; father-in-law, Vernon Atkinson; mother-in-law, Grace Atkinson; son-in-law, Lyle Aden; her brothers—Vance (Evelyn and Muriel) Cline, Bill Cline and Robert (Eunice) Cline; a sister, Ruth (Maurice) Anderson.
Survivors include: her son, Dee (Jo) Atkinson; her daughter, Peggy Aden; grandchildren, Kevin (Kim) Atkinson, Brent (Lynnette) Atkinson, Amber Atkinson (Micah Edson), Mike (Marci) Johnson and David Johnson; great-grandsons, Cole Atkinson and Cade Atkinson; a sister-in-law, Frida Cline; numerous extended family members.
