Rickie Calvin Beasley, 63, died Oct. 10, 2009, at 11:56 p.m., at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. Rickie was diagnosed with myelodysplasia/CMML in April 2008. His condition was caused by Agent Orange in Vietnam. He had a stem cell transplant on Aug. 28, 2009. As a result of the chemotherapy drugs and graft-versus-host disease, Rickie contracted a disease specific to the liver called veno-occulsive disease. His liver cells died and his kidneys failed. Rickie had lived in Alaska for the last 35 years. He was cremated at Lowmans Funeral Home in Phoenix, Ariz.

Rickie will have a military funeral performed by the U.S. Marine Corps Detachment at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at Fort Richardson. Fort Richardson does not allow people to park cars and carpool at the front entrance. Everyone who would like to attend from Anchorage, drive to the Highland Exit, turn around, get back on the Glenn Highway, drive 50 yards, turn right to the bike parking lot next to the Weigh Station and meet up with the lead vehicle. Please be there by 1:50 p.m. The lead vehicle will be a 2006 brown Chrysler, license plate EWL 400. People coming from the Valley, please meet up with the lead vehicle at 1400 E. Rickie was born Jan. 1, 1946, to Calvin Evans Beasley and Hazel Atleata Beasley in Whites Chapel, Ala. Rickie loved his mother and his sister and family very much.

Rickie was in the U.S. Marine Corps from September 1963 through September 1967. He was a Vietnam veteran and served under Capt. Robert Nilsson with distinction in B Company, 1st Shore Party Battalion, participating in numerous combat operations.

Rickie was a police officer in Childersburg and Sylacauga, Ala., and decided to go to Nunnelly Trade School in Childersburg. He obtained an associate's degree in auto body repair and diesel mechanics and worked in Dillingham, Alaska, from 1978 to 1981 as a diesel mechanic. He was promoted to shop foreman, State of Alaska, Department of Transportation, Palmer DOT Shop, in February 1981 to 1993. He worked for City Electric in Anchorage and Kenai until 2006 and worked for the Arctic Slope Regional Corp. at Kuparak from December 2006 until April 2009.

He was a loving and giving husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend. He mentored the two grandsons he and his wife raised, and both became Eagle Scouts. Rick was full of love and will be missed by his family every day.

Surviving family include his wife of 44 years and 7 1/2 months, Emilie Marie Beasley; his children, Mary Lynn Beasley, and Alicia Danette Showers and companion Don Showers; nine grandchildren, Sonny, Skyler, Cody, Calvin, Ben, Zachary, Joshua, Rickie and Michelle; his mother, Hazel Atleata Thomas; his sister and husband, Mike and Carolyn Martin; niece and grandnephew, Jodi and Mike; nephews, Calvin Rickie and Joshua Bart and wife Bonnie; and grandniece, Audrey; other nephews, Byron Hubbard and Scott Bailey; and a host of other family and friends.

Rickie was preceded in death by his father, Calvin Evans Beasley; and daughter, Atleata Marie Beasley.
