The son of Joseph Rathvon & Elizabeth (Sourbier) Urban, in 1860 he was a carpenter living with his family in Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes. He married Barbara Landis in 1861 and fathered John Wesley (b. 04/05/62), Ida Virginia (b. 01/16/64), Elizabeth (b. @1869), Anna M. (b. 11/??/70), Estella (b. @1874), Charles Houston (b. 12/19/75), Emma Jane (b. 06/??/75), and Joseph Franklin (b. 01/18/81)

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Conestoga, Lancaster County, September 12, 1862, as a private with Co. A, 18th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 26, 1862. He then enlisted in Lancaster June 18, 1863, mustered into federal service there June 24 as a corporal with Co. I, 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864. He last enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 27, 1864, as a private with Co. F, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged by general order May 29, 1865.
