EDWARDS, BEN QUINTELL - age 94, formerly of Edwards Road in Maynardville, TN died November 21, 2010. Born on July 23, 1916, in Whitlock, TN. He was a veteran of WWII. He married his wife Ruby Merle Hill, his sister Sue's best friend, on February 5, 1949. They raised three children in Southaven, MS. Ben enjoyed capturing his family's life on film starting in 1958 with over 24 hours of 8mm home movies. He worked for Illinois-Central Railroad in Memphis, TN for 39 years. When he retired from the railroad he moved with Merle to Maynardville, TN in 1981. They enjoyed almost 25 years of retirement together on beautiful Norris Lake. They were active members of the Hickory Valley Baptist Church until they moved to Knoxville in 2004. Ben was always quite the character. Sam Venable featured him twice in his column. The first was for the gargantuan pop-top chain that is more than a mile in length and weighs nearly 50 pounds that he pieced together as a conductor on the railroad. The second was for a holiday fruitcake that his mom shipped him during WWII and the perfect beverage to accompany this sweet treat, hot native South Pacific beer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Lois Edwards. Ben is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruby Merle Edwards; his sister Sue Wagner; son Michael Edwards and partner Richard Cummings; daughter Gwen Edwards and husband Neil Battle; "the baby" Steven Edwards and wife Maria; granddaughter April and her husband Micah Sumner; and great grandsons Eric and Harrison Sumner. Family and friends will gather at noon on Tuesday for a graveside service at Yadon Cemetery on Walker Ford Road in Maynardville. Cooke Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
