Philip was the son of Old China trader Philip, Sr. who co-founded the Russell & Company trading house in Canton, China in 1824. In 1828 Ammidon Sr. chose William Henry Low (1795-1834) as a new partner with Russell & Co.

In the summer of 1829 Ammidon Jr. traveled with William H. Low, his wife Abigail and niece Harriet Low (1809-1877), the famed diarist, on the four-month journey aboard the Sumatra across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans as they made their move to China.
