SAM SORRELL of Houston passed away Thursday, the 3rd of December, 2009 at age 81. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and faithful friend remembered for the smile he had for everyone. Sam was born in Peoria, Illinois, son of Edna and David Sorrell. His family moved to Houston when he was one. He was raised in Houston and graduated from Baylor University in 1950. In 1951, he married his college sweetheart, Mauvirine Barr Sorrell. His professional career started with Gulf Oil working summers during college and then joining Gulf Oil as a salesman. He also had joined the Naval Reserve early on. He served in the Navy and was discharged in 1956.

Sam joined Gulf Publishing Company in Houston. They published magazines, books and catalogs for the oil industry and he retired as Vice President in 1992. He then worked with SCF Partners retiring in 2002.

Sam belonged to a number of professional organizations such as Nomads, IPLOCA, Pesa, NOIA and others and was a member of the Petroleum Club.

Sam served his Lord faithfully, teaching Bible classes, serving as Chairman of the Deacons at South Main Baptist Church, serving on the Foreign Mission Board and helping to start the Baptist Church in Madison, New Jersey. He was formerly a member of South Main Baptist, Houston, First Baptist, Conroe and now, Tallowood Baptist, Houston.

Sam is preceded in death by his daughter Nancy Sorrell Muirhead. Sam is survived by his wife Mauvirine Sorrell; son Mark Sorrell and wife Laura Houston, Texas; son Scott Sorrell and wife Jan, of Coppell, Texas; son-in-law Joe Muirhead, of Ennis, Texas; grandchildren, Katherine and Stephen Sorrell, of Houston, Texas and Samuel, Luke and Ben Sorrell, of Coppell, Texas; brothers Ben Sorrell, of Austin, Texas and Merle Sorrell, of Onalaska, Texas, and sister Mary Laird, of Montgomery, Texas.

The memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on the 7th of December at Tallowood Baptist located at 555 Tallowood Drive, Houston, Texas, the Rev. Duane Brooks, the Rev. Doctor Charles Walton, and the Rev. Larry Bergstrom are to serve as celebrants. Family will gather for a private graveside service at Houston National Cemetery.
