Eliza L. Matthews was born on Sept. 20, 1834 in Co. Antrim, Ireland and immigrated with her family, thru Liverpool, England, aboard a ship called the Southerner, which arrived in New York City on Aug. 16, 1842.

She is listed on the ship's manifest, along with her parents, James and Nancy (Caulfield) Matthews, her Ireland born 3 brothers and 2 sisters, two uncles, Andrew and David Matthews, one aunt, Rose (Matthews) Pool and Rose's 6 Ireland born sons.

There was a Joseph or James Matthews (age 50) who was listed with the families but We don't know how He was related.

Eliza was married on Nov. 7, 1854 in Lafayette Co., MO. to William L. McGinness. She died on Jan. 26, 1857 in Lafayette Co. and was laid to rest at the McGinness Cemetery, along with her parents, James and Nancy (Caulfield) Matthews, her sister, Mary Ann (Matthews) Pool and Mary's husband, Samuel.

I believe she may be the Mother of one child. There is a Thomas R.N. McGinness [McGinnis] listed in the 1870 census as being 14 years old. Since this would likely put Thomas' year of birth in 1856 and his mother [Eliza] having died in 1857, I would imagine he was her only child and a nephew to William's second wife, Ann "Jane" McGinness [Matthews]. Yet I do not see him listed anywhere except this 1870 census.

Thank you, Wade for sharing this interesting information and hopefully someone will link Thomas' memorial to his parents' memorials.
