The county's traffic death toll for 1957 jumped to five Saturday night when two Kokomo residents were fatally injured in a two-car collision on US 35 about on emile west of Greentown.

Victims of the head-on crash were Mrs. Nellie Perkins, 63, 1035 S Ohio Ave and Paul Adams, 52, Greentown.

Howard County coroner said Adams died seconds after the collision, which occurred about 6:40 p.m. Saturday, and that Mrs. Perkins died less than an hour later in St Joseph Hospital here.

The coroner said Adams suffered a fractured neck, broken left leg and internal injuries. He added that Mrs. Perkins suffered a skull fracture, and fractures of the right arm and right leg.

Investigating officers said the victims were driving alone in their autos on US 35, Adams westbound and Mrs. Perkins traveling east.

State Trooper Elmer Holtman, who investigated with Deputy Sheriffs Fred Foland and Tome Leap and Greentown Marshal John Harper, reported that marks on the highway indicated the impact occurred north of the center line.

"From the evidence we were able to get, it is our supposition that the eastbound auto crossed the center line and hit the westbound car." the state tropper added.

The motor of Perkins' car was knocked from its mounting into a ditch about 25 feet away, the state tropper said, adding that the Adams' auto went off the northside of the highway. Both vehicles were demolished.

An ambulance owned by the Sells and Rowe Funeral Home, Anderson came upon on the scene shortly after the accident and transported Mrs. Perkins to the hospital. Authorities said the ambulance was enroute to Logansport.

Mr. Adams was employed as a maintenance machinist by the Chrysler Corporation. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and had lived in Kokomo practically all of his life until moving to Greentown last July.
