Son-in-law of Victor Hugo.
Was part of a family of pilots and fishermen on the Seine River.
Son of Charles-Isidore Vacquerie (1779-1843), shipowner in Le Havre.

It was through his brother Auguste Vacquerie that Charles met Victor Hugo . Auguste, a student at the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris, had staged the play Hernani for his comrades, with Victor Hugo's authorization. He had gradually come to frequent the house in the Place Royale where Hugo resided.

In the summer of 1838, the Hugo family was invited by Vacquerie to Villequier, where they owned a family home near the Seine. It was during this stay that Léopoldine (eldest daughter of Hugo) and Charles Vacquerie met. The two planned to marry the following year. However, several bereavements in the Vacquerie family delayed this. The marriage finally took place on February 15, 1843.

On September 4, 1843, they embarked from Villequier in a racing boat that Charles' uncle Pierre Vacquerie had just built, in order to arrive by the Seine, to return visit to Maître Bazire, notary of Caudebec .

On the way back, a sudden gust of wind capsized the boat upstream from Villequier that carried Léopoldine, Charles, Pierre Vacquerie and his young son, Arthus, 11 years old.

Only Charles managed to free himself. An excellent swimmer, he tried six times to bring his wife to the surface but he did not succeed and drowned with the rest.

Victor Hugo later devoted a poem, "Charles Vacquerie", to his son-in-law.
