Holocaust Memorial. This powerful commemoration of the Nazi genocide can be found in Mount Sinai Memorial Park, nestled at the foot of Mt. Lee in the Hollywood Hills. On a field of gravel, some two-dozen cement slabs bear the names of concentration camps, ghettos, and massacre sites where victims of the Holocaust perished. Standing watch over them are six stark wooden sculptures, completed in 1966 by noted California artist Bernard Zakheim (1896 - 1985). They were inspired by the 1944 Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The three figures in the foreground symbolize oppression and are entitled "I Don't Want to Get Involved (Unwilling to act to save himself or others)", "Jew with Torah (Seeking Truth, Peace and Justice)", and the frightening centerpiece, "Genocide (The children were the real victims)". Above them are "Woman Warrior", "For Our and Your Liberty (Ghetto Freedom Fighter Carrying Bazooka)", and "Martyrdom (Suicide rather than degradation)", which represent the struggle of the human spirit to overcome inhumanity. The eternal flame at the center of the memorial stands for the rebirth of Israel from the ashes of the World War II era. At night it could be seen from two miles away, when the rest of the hillside is bathed in darkness.
