Mrs. Felicia Davis Means Byrd of 16 Pearls Lane, Greenville, South Carolina, died Thursday December 3, 2009 at her home of natural causes.
She is the daughter of Mr. Richard Davis and Mrs. Tena Garrett Davis. She was the last of eight siblings. She was born in Greenville county September 17, 1922.
Felicia's memberships included: Rock Hill Baptist Church #2, where she was the oldest living member; Laurel Creek Order of the Eastern Stars chapter #165; NAACP Life member; board of directors for Sloan Inc. that owned and operated the Ghana Motel and Restaurant a first for Blacks in Greenville; Board of Directors Genesis Media Group, publishers of FOCUS News and Premier Magazine.
She was active in the movement to de-segregate lunch counters and eating establishments and schools in Greenville county.
Felicia, after the loss of her first husband, Berry Means, as a result of a fishing boat accident, was wed to Lewis Byrd Sr. Their only son, L.R. Byrd, became one of the original complainants in the School de-segregation lawsuit for Greenville county schools.
Felicia and her brothers worked with Greenville businessmen to start the development of brick affordable housing for Blacks in the Rock Hill, Pine Hill, Jacobs Road areas of Greenville.
She is survived by her son Lewis Ronald Byrd; five grandchildren, Eric Sharrone Shumate, of Durham, N.C. Lewis Ronald Byrd, III, of Atlanta, Georgia, Ladd Richard Byrd, of Greenville, Chasity S. Everett, Raleigh, N.C. and Patrick Lemuel Ryan Byrd of Atlanta, Ga. Five great-grandchildren, Sloan Byrd, Brandon Everett, Lauren Byrd, Leah Byrd and Chase Byrd, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services: Tuesday, 3 p.m., Rock Hill Baptist Church #2, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 6 until 7 p.m. at Watkins, Garrett & Woods Mortuary
