Adelbert "Abby" Herman Niemeier, 80, died January 30, 2005 at Community Memorial Healthcare, Marysville, KS from pneumonia complications. The funeral service was held Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bremen, KS, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jack Kirk officiating. The organist was Kathy Pralle. Congregational hymns were "What A Friend We Have in Jesus", "Abide with Me", and "Rock of Ages". "How Great Thou Art" was sung by the Immanuel Church choir. Pallbearers were nephews: Harlan Metschke, Gerald Harnisch, Kenneth Mueller, Kelly Koch, Harvey Blackwood, and David Blackwood. Honorary pallbearers were the Rev. Rodney Fritz, Mildford Drinkgern, Robert Gleue, Virgil Kruse, Marvin Beckman, Harold Prell. Burial was at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Bremen, KS, with dinner for family and friends in the fellowship hall following.
He was born February 16, 1924, on the home place ¼ mile west of Bremen, KS. He was the fifth child of 10 children born to the marriage of Herman and Wilhelmine (Lohse) Niemeier. He was baptized March 2, 1924, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bremen, KS. His sponsors were Herman Luedders and Henry Rickenberg. He was confirmed April 10, 1938, at the same church. His confirmation verse was Psalm 143:10. He completed eight years of school at the public and parochial country schools at Bremen. He was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bremen, KS, participating in the choir when he was younger and spend many years in church service as assistant financial secretary.
He and his parents farmed the home place where he lived all 80 years of his life. They were one of the first to implement conservation practices including contour farming, pasture seeding, terraces and crop rotation. He was the third generation to farm this homestead. He also had milk cows, cattle, pigs, chickens, and a variety of farm dogs over the years. He retired from farming in 1996. His pastimes included: bowling, card playing, pool, and driving around the country roads checking on crops.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Wilhelmine Niemeier; three sisters, Edna Niemeier (infant), Elsie Gerdes, and Hermiena Metschke. He is survived by four sisters: Orlinda Harnisch, Scribner, NE; Verda Mueller, North Bend, NE; Delores Koch, Columbus, NE; Lola Mae Blackwood, Belleville, KS; two brothers: Alfred Niemeier, Fremont, NE; Edgar Niemeier, Marysville, KS; and nine nieces and sixteen nephews.
