Family Tribute

Gordon James Barton
1929 - 2009

Gordon passed away on November 21, 2009 with loved ones by his side. Those with him were his wife of 36 years, Prapai Barton of Eugene, their daughter, Darlene Seltzer of Corvallis, and two grandchildren, Christina Adams of Eugene and Jessica Barton of Medford.

Gordon was born in Capetown, South Africa, and was raised in East Africa. In his late teens, Gordon traveled to England for a short time. He then moved to Canada, where he served as a chartered accountant in the Royal Canadian Airforce. After leaving Canada, he lived and worked in Mexico where he learned to speak fluent Spanish. He moved to the United States in the 1960's and to Eugene in 1978 with his third wife and their only child. Gordon worked as a salesman for several years, operated his own furniture sales business, and owned and operated a small electronics store in Eugene during the 1980's.

Gordon was best known for his great storytelling ability and found joy in humor and making others laugh. He had a gregarious nature and enjoyed making conversation with anyone. For the last 28 years of his life, he followed a philosophical and spiritual path known as Radha Soami which emphasizes spiritual development through a vegetarian diet, abstinence from intoxicants, and daily meditation.

In addition to the aforementioned family members, Gordon is survived by 14 other children living in the U.S. and Canada, as well as his second wife, Kayla Gibb Barton. There are 51 other grandchildren, including his most recent, 11-month old Avery Seltzer of Corvallis, as well as several great grandchildren. Gordon was preceded in death by his first wife, Anita Barton, and two of their sons.

A remembrance gathering is planned for what would have been Gordon's 81st birthday, April 23, 2010. The family asks that contributions be made to Hospice Care of Sacred Heart, whose staff helped ensure Gordon's comfort during his final days.
