David St John was the son of Nehemiah and Elmena (Freeman) St John and was born on July 16, 1848, two months before his sister Alzina died, near Porter, Rock County, Wisconsin. The hamlet of Porter has been absorbed by the present city of Janesville. When David was about three years of age (in 1852) the family moved to Clayton County, Iowa where he lived until his death. In April 7, 1871, he married Francis Jane McLain at Volga, Clayton County, Iowa. Some sources spell her name "Frances." David was surrounded by members of his family who had taken up farming near the Clayton-Fayette county line. These included the St Johns, the Phillips, the Freemans, and the Butlers. Numerous members of these families took up homesteads, developed farms and intermarried over the next several decades. David and Frances had five children: Frank, who farmed in Iowa, Kansas and Minnesota and eventually came West and died at Toppenish, Washington; Myrtle who died in infancy; Myron, who also farmed in the area; Maude, who after marrying moved East with her husband; and Richard, the twin brother of Maude who died in infancy and was buried at the Reed Cemetery located near Volga, Iowa. David died February 19, 1928 at Arlington and is buried in the Taylorsville cemetery. His wife Francis, who died October 28, 1938 at Arlington is buried next to her husband.
