Croghan, William Bill Sr. St. Louis custom home builder, devoted husband and father of four, died Thursday (Dec. 3, 2009). He was 51 and lived in Kirkwood.

Croghan and his companies, Boa Construction and Architectural Millwork of St. Louis (AMSL) completed hundreds of custom homes, complex renovations and additions since he started Boa Construction in 1982.

Croghan began his career as a carpenter and, in his own words, earned a reputation as a boss willing to roll up his sleeves. Croghan and his companies have frequently been featured in St. Louis At Home Magazine, The St. Louis Business Journal, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and other publications for their work with Habitat for Humanity, innovations with green homebuilding, and their use of technology in their projects.

Boa Construction was most recently recognized in St. Louis At Home Magazine's The Best of Everything Nov-Dec 2009 issue as Best Builder.

His exuberant, gentle and loving personality made him memorable and beloved by everyone who met him. Croghan frequently entertained family and friends with his original, humor-filled songs and stories. His presence filled the room.

He generously gave his time and talents, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, competed in weightlifting competitions, coached his children's basketball teams, and was a Cub Scout leader.

He was self taught in many subjects and read extensively, especially in philosophy, leadership and business topics.

He earned a business degree through Washington University's Executive MBA program in 2008.

Among the survivors, in addition to his wife, Rhonda, are four children, Bill Jr, 23; Gus, 20; Jake, 16; and Carrie, 13; his father Dr. Matt Croghan, of Glendale; four siblings, Edward Croghan (Eileen) of Ballwin, Suzanne Heger (Brad) of Brentwood, Mary Lou Farb (Jeff) of Frontenac, and Patrick Croghan (Kathy) of Richmond Heights; their children and families, and countless friends.

Services: A visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at BOPP CHAPEL, 10610 Manchester Rd. in Kirkwood. The Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at Our Lady of Lourdes, 7204 Forsyth Blvd., University City. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery following the funeral. If desired, contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity and American Cancer Society.
