Andrew grew up on his father's farm at Mapleton, Iowa. He taught school and later enrolled at Iowa State College and graduated as a Civil Engineer. As soon as he graduated, he took up engineering work with a railroad and continued until his death. He died of typhoid fever.
He was a member of the Baptist Church.
