Enlisted MI 24th Infantry 13 Aug 1862 at Detroit MI as a Private, Mustered Out on 30 June 1865 at Detroit, MI. Promoted to Corporal 1 Jan 1865. While at Camp Butler IL before discharge, he was part of the escort for President Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession along with his brother Frank Tice and friend Sheldon Crittendon.(Per Anne Klintworth-Shier "Descendants of Johann Adam Shier")
