Mrs. Helen Nelson Brown Amos, 73, of 1034 Amostown Road died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Britthaven of Madison. Mrs. Amos was born July 3, 1930, in Stokes County to the late Bessie Wood Nelson and George S. Nelson. She worked in Washington Mills for 19 years. In 1972, she went to work for the U.S. Postal Service, became the postmaster of Sandy Ridge in 1986, and retired in 1997 after 25 years of service. Helen was a member of Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church for 60 years, where she served for 30 years as treasurer of the church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by foster parents, Claudia and Joe Pharis; two foster brothers, Hunter and Ralph Pharis; two husbands, Robert (Bud) Brown and Billy Amos; a sister, Pauline Nelson Kennedy and a brother, Dennis (Buster) Adkins. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Brown Craddock and husband David of Spencer, Va.; a stepson, Mike Carter and wife Teresa of Sandy Ridge; three grandchildren, two sisters, Lois N. Hill of Kernersville and Ruby Swain and husband Russell of High Point; and a brother, Bobby Nelson and wife Kay of Archdale. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
