LITCHFIELD - Ret. Warrant Officer-IV Robert L. Allen, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at his residence.

He was born March 12, 1923, in Nokomis, son of the late Clarence and Inez Allen.

Mr. Allen retired from the Illinois Army National Guard in 1978 after 36 years of military service. A 1941 graduate of Litchfield High School, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 at the age of 19. From August 1943 to October 1944, he served overseas, participating in air strikes against the enemy at Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands and Bonin Islands where he was stationed in the American Samoa.

Mr. Allen was discharged in November 1945 as a Staff Sergeant Ammo Specialist. He then enlisted with the Illinois Army National Guard Unit at Litchfield. While serving in the ING he was promoted to first sergeant in the 42nd motor company. He departed with the Litchfield unit of the ING when they were activated to Camp Cook, Calif., and went on to Korea for replacement of Ammo Officer for the 9th Corps Headquarters. While there, he received the Korean Service Medal and the United Service Medal.

Mr. Allen was promoted to Warrant Officer, Junior Grade in January 1952. Upon returning to Litchfield in September 1953, he was sent to the ING state maintenance office of the USPFO in Springfield. In April 1962, he was transferred as a mechanic foreman to the 3rd Battalion Headquarters at East St. Louis. During those years, he was responsible for enlisting several men from this area in the Illinois National Guard.

While in the ING, Mr. Allen attended various service schools at Fort Carson, Colo., Personal Management School in Chicago and was appointed recruiting and retention officer.

Service awards earned include the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nation Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal twice, Good Conduct Medal and the Presidential unit citation, one from Korea and one from the Marine Corps.

Mr. Allen was past Post Commander of the Litchfield American Legion Post 436, member of the La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux (40/8), life member of the VFW, Litchfield Honorary Volunteer Firefighter, Athletic Director for the American Legion District 21 baseball team, Chairman of the American Legion's Hutton Scholarship Committee and member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Allen of Mt. Olive and sister, Mary Ann Athy of Pocahontas, Ariz. He is survived by brother, William Allen of Highland and sister, Margaret Lebeter of Mt. Olive.

Mr. Allen is also survived by his wife Margie, whom he married Oct. 30, 1942, in St. Charles, Mo. Mrs. Allen is the former Margie Birkenkamp, daughter of the late Frank and Bessie Birkenkamp of Litchfield.

Also surviving are two children, Constance Stewart of Litchfield and Robert Lee (Buddy) Allen II of Chicago; grandchildren Rodney Allen Stewart of Hillsboro and Cindy Webb of Tulsa, Okla.; great-grandchildren Katie, Cecelia and Ali Stewart of Nokomis, and Gage and Finley Webb of Tulsa.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. The Rev. William Zanton will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2008, at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church or American Legion Post 436, both in Litchfield
