Vernon Rhodes, 82, of Menomonie died Friday Oct. 23, 2009, at Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie, with his family by his side.
Vernon was born April 21, 1927. He married Dorothy Lemke Jan. 25, 1949. Vernon served in the U.S. Navy and was a World War II veteran. While in the Navy, he gained an interest in cooking. He spent 32 years with UW-Stout, including several years serving as the dining service manager in the Memorial Student Center. Vernon enjoyed his family, gardening, traveling, collecting antiques and making rugs. After retirement in 1990, he spent winters in Mexico and Arizona. He also enjoyed going to antique shows and auctions.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Effie; a sister, Darlene Thompson; and many aunts and uncles.
Vernon will be sadly missed by his family, including his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy; children, Sharon (Jon) Becker, Linda (Steve Lautenschlauger) Shoemaker, Steven (Kate Klass) Rhodes and Susan (Greg) Kaiser; grandchildren, Chad (Janet) Johnson, Aaron (Emily) Johnson, Christel (Ronnie) Clark-Johnson, Alyssa (Cameron Riedelman) Miller, Kristine (John) Davies, Jayson Shoemaker, Matthew (Cari) Greeley, Ethan Kaiser and Nichole (Joel) Roemhild; and great-grandchildren, Kotter, Jeramiah and Gibson Johnson, Kaelin and Jack Davies, Avery Shoemaker, and Cortlyn Greeley.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Menomonie, with the Rev. Brett Voigt officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Interment will be at St. Paul's Cemetery.
