Pvt. Pennefeather served with Company 'B', New York Heavy Artillery, during the Civil War. His company was captured at the Battle of Petersburg, VA, and he spent the remainder of the war at Andersonville Prison Camp GA.

It wasn't until December, 2009, that a government headstone was placed upon his unmarked grave.
