A meticulously handwritten journal by Lizzie Fenner Baker is now in the possession of Richard Arthur Fenner. Lizzie was the wife of Lt. Col. Francis Baker of the 15th Cavalry Anderson Troop Volunteer Civil War Soldiers. The journal comes from an old estate on Long Island. It includes poems dated from 1855 to 1856. Some of Lizzie's poems were published in local papers. The following are a few excerpts of Lizzie's poetry: My Dreams long ago in the golden summer A sweet dream came to me, As I stood in the fading sunset Beside the sleeping sea! Blanche The midnight's halls are cold and wide Yet lighted all with stars, That follow with unfaltering feet The warrior planet Mars! Never More The night wind plays and sings Beside the closed door, And each song begins and closes With these words "never more".
