ARLINGTON -- William Thomas "Bill" Allen, 83, flew away home to the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009.

Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at Lamar Baptist Church, Arlington. Interment: Moore Memorial Gardens, Arlington. A luncheon to honor Bill will follow at Lamar Baptist Church. Visitation: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Moore Funeral Home.

Bill was born June 13, 1925, in Gainesville. He retired from American Airlines after 35 years as a flight engineer. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and again during the Korean War, when he trained tank mechanics.

Bill enjoyed fishing, being in the mountains, driving Jeep trails in Colorado, building model airplanes and fixing things. He also carved kachina dolls. He was a skilled woodworker whose many projects included building toy boxes for his grandchildren. In the '60s he built a fiberglass cabin cruiser that he and his family enjoyed fishing from. Bill loved to travel extensively throughout the United States and Europe.

Bill was actively involved as a Boy Scout leader for 10 years and served as scoutmaster for Troop 131 from 1967-1971. He was a very active member of Lamar Baptist Church. He was a devoted servant of the Lord and could often be found repairing things around the church and helping other members with repairs in their homes.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Cuba Thomas Allen and Nellie Williams Allen of Gainesville.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks and love to the members of Lamar Baptist Church for their many kindnesses and support and also to Bill's nurses and caregivers who gently cared not only for Bill but for the family as well.

Survivors: Loving wife, Betty D. Allen; daughter, Donna Allen Miller; son, Charles Bradley "Brad" Allen and wife, Sonia "Sunny," of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Nicole "Nikki" Jones and husband, Dan, of Waxhaw, N.C., Jennifer "Jennie" Crotts and husband, Grant, of Springfield, Mo., and Shane Frederick of Chandler, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Caroline Jones and Nathan Jones. He is also survived by an extended family and many loving friends at Lamar Baptist Church.
