Nehemiah St John, the youngest son of Seth and Rebecca Foster St John, spent his youth near the town of Hubberton, Vermont helping his father on their farm. By the time he had reached the age of thirty-one, Nehemiah decided to move West. Still a bachelor, he and his brother Levi traveled to Janesville, Wisconsin to establish farms. His oldest brother Samuel Wheeler St John had gone to Rock County a year earlier. This was in 1836. After three years of farming in Wisconsin, he married Elmena Freeman on February 5, 1839. They farmed and raised six of their children in Porter, Rock County, Wisconsin for the next twelve years. The family then moved to Clayton County, Iowa in 1852 and established a farm near Volga on the Clayton-Fayette County border where they spent the remainder of their lives. Two more children were born into the family. Nehemiah died on September 1, 1888 and Elmena passed away on December 20, 1887. Elmena has a stone at her gravesite; Nehemiah on one side of her and her son Myron, who also died in 1887, on the other side of her. The stone is in the form of a shaft. Their granddaughter Ruthie (Winfield Scott's eldest daughter) is buried in the same cemetery. Reed Cemetery is located near the hamlet of Volga in Sperry Township, Clayton County, Iowa.
