Virgil A. Weathers, 69, of Huntsville, died Saturday, Aug. 19, in the Madison County Hospital. He had been in ill health for some time, and suffered a stroke a few days before his death.
Mr. Weathers was born May 23, 1898 at Kingston, the son of Wm. Thomas Weathers and Julia Ann Patterson. He was twice elected Sheriff of Madison County, serving from 1933 to 1936. Later he was selected as a State Trooper and was the first man from Madison County to wear the uniform of the State Police force. He left the police force and became a game warden in which position he served until his retirement a few years ago. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the IOOF Lodge.
Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Jewel Weathers of the home; a son, Fred, of Fayetteville; three daughters, Mrs. Naomi Dotson of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Mrs. Billie Joe Maguire and Mrs. Bobbie Jean Selle, both of Fayetteville; three brothers, Burl, of Kingston, Herman of Huntsville, and Glenn of Grandview, Wash.; five sisters, Mrs. Maudie Armes, Mrs. Lillie Phillips and Mrs. Esta McFerrin, all of Springdale; Mrs. Flossie Ramsey of Cartersville, Mo., and Mrs. Jessie Radsch of Prosser, Wash.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral service was at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 22, conducted by Bartly Schwegler and Noel Easterling at the Presbyterian Church. Burial in the - Kingston cemetery with arrangements by Brashears Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Billy Weathers, Leonard McFerrin, Wendell McFerrin, Park McFerrin, Van Dean McFerrin and Noel Armes.
Honorary Pallbearers were: Tern Hargis, Orval Faubus, Hugh Murphy, Clay McBroom, Clarence Watson, Arlis Coger, Jim Trimble, Clyde Bell and Noah Leatham.
