Story from "The Independent Herald",. "Case Of Smallpox North of Town" April of 1911. R.M. Phillips, who returned last Friday from Kansas City, where he was a student during the winter at Kansas City Veterinary College, is sick from smallpox at the home of his parents, two miles north of town. He was not feeling well when he arrived here, and by Sunday was quite sick. Monday the nature of the disease was discovered and the Phillips home placed under quarantine. Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Washburn, who there Sunday, are also Quarantined at their home southwest of town. Miss Bertha Phillip, who teaches in the Brand district in Gosper County, on account of the quarantine probably cannot complete the term.
Mr. Phillips returned home intending to engage in veterinary practice here during the summer, and will be delayed somewhat by his illness."

United in marriage with Ola Rogers on Aug 11, 1912 in David City, Butler, Nebraska, by Rev. J. R. Gettys, pastor of the Methodist church. One surviving child was born to them. Margaret Ruth Phillips Vest.

He and Ola moved to Colorado for a while, then came back to Nebraska and stayed.

He became a widower in 1943.

October 1, 1945 in Smith Center, Kansas, he was united in marriage with Myra Kathryn "Katie" Westfall Peterson, who had been a widow since 1919, raising her 4 children on her own and caring for her parents until they passed within a year of one another in the mid 1920's.

Katie's children loved Ross and were happy that he and Katie were so happy together. His daughter was as happy as well and I know that she was a life long friend of Katie's oldest daughter Nadine.
