David was the son of Rev. George Washington Cole & Rebecca Franklin. George was the first known white settler in what is now Dent County, Missouri. He cleared and cultivated a farm near Short Bend on the Meramac River in 1828. David married Mary Springer 7 February 1850. They had eight children: Nancy Elizabeth Hoover; Rebecca Jane Woodward; George Washington; Mary Frances Woodward; John Little; James David; William Bruce; and Martha Louisa.
David established the Cole graveyard when his son, John Little, died according to his granddaughter,Ida Belle Cole Holland.
David did not fight in the Civil War since he was a minister. He moved his family to Rolla, MO for the duration of the War as protection from the numerous raids in the area.
He, his father, George, and his father-in law, Rev. John Springer established several churches in the area. At the time of his death he was a member of Hepsoda Baptist Church. His membership was "erased" April,1873. [Died Nov 22, 1872].
