Cpl. Newton's Body Arrives From Europe
Final Rites For Local Soldier To Be Held At Leitchfield, Kentucky

The remains of Cpl. Robert A. Newton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude L. Newton, of 612 North Cicott street, have been returned to the United States from Italy, it was announced today by the Army. The body was shipped here aboard the Army Transport Carroll Victory from a temporary military cemetery at Barra, Italy. Cpl. Newton, who was serving with the First Armored Division was captured on February 14, 1943 when the Germans broke through at Kasserine Pass in North Africa. He was taken to a concentration camp in Italy. When Italy surrendered, he was freed from the concentration camp at Ascronia, on the Adriatic coast. He was killed on March 9, 1944, by Germans, while attempting to reach the American lines. Cpl. Newton was born in Jeffersonville, Ind., on September 5, 1916. He attended St. Bridget's school and was graduated from Logansport high school. He was attending Indiana university for his second year when he entered the Army on September 9, 1941. He went to North Ireland in June 1942 and then went to England and later to North Africa where he was captured. The Vatican notified his parents that he was being held a prisoner of war in Italy. Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Newton, city; and two brothers, James G. Newton, 431 East Linden avenue, and Joseph N. Newton, of Los Angeles, Cal. A sister preceded him in death. Final rites will be conducted at Leitchfield, Ky., and burial will be made it Carson (Clarkson), Ky. The body will be escorted by Capt.
