About 1802, William McCash contrived a crude water-cart of two poles, with a cross-piece in the middle, the upper ends for shafts, and pegs upon the lower parts to keep the barrel on. (Horses were placed between the front ends of the shafts to the drag the apparatus.) With this apparatus he furnished the first water-supply to the city of Cincinnati. Mr. McCash also made a wheeled cart, which was a curiosity, even in those days, the wheels being of wood, about two and a half feet in diameter and six inches thick. They were fastened to an axel, which revolved in large staples. And, so, hauled the first load of goods on his cart, ever transported through the streets of Cincinnati.
