Longtime Alaskan Richard Lagod, 75, died Jan. 28, 2006, at his Anchorage home. A service was at Walker's Funeral Home, 500 Muldoon Road. After the funeral, attendees proceeded to Fort Richardson National Cemetery for a graveside service.

Mr. Lagod was born Feb. 28, 1930, in Lublin, Poland. Mr. Lagod served in the U.S. Army. His family wrote: "One of his contributions to our military was a redesign of a machine gun mount, which saved the military untold amounts. Mr. Lagod was honored with a plaque and a monetary award for his achievements. "Mr. Lagod came to Alaska around 1941 and was one of four paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division who jumped in Alaska. Richard retired from the military at Fort Richardson with honors and then went into the Civil Service to work with the Federal Communications Commission. "Richard loved Alaska so much that he homesteaded here. He single-handedly built the home he raised his family in and lived there for over 50 years. Richard was a man with a big heart and a great provider. "He had many friends, from all walks of life. He will be missed dearly."

Mr. Lagod is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Richard, Mark and Stanley; daughters, Linda Lagod and Donna Lagod; and grandchildren, Paul, Leslie, Jessica, Eric and Kevin.
