Eldest son of Barton Lee and Frances Neely Mallory.
Major William Neely Mallory, U.S. Army Air Corps, was in the 12th Air Force during WWII. Legion of Merit He was on a plane headed for home via London. A passenger on RAF Lockheed Mk VI, #FK608, piloted by F/L Harry Barron Cooper. Left engine failed shortly after takeoff from Florence, Italy on 9 Feb. 1945. Aircraft spun in from 400 feet. 4 crew and 6 passengers all killed. He is buried in the Florence American Cemetery, Florence, Italy. The William Neely Mallory Award is the most prestigious award given to a senior male athlete at Yale. The award is named after William Neely Mallory, an athlete in the Yale College Class of 1924. Served on the board of Memphis Cotton Carnival and Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes College) beginning in 1937 and was Treasurer from 1938 until his death. A gymnasium at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, is named for him.
