Egyptian Pharaoh. He was the second ruler of the Fifth Dynasty, inheriting the throne from his father, Userkaf, in 2487 BC. Reliefs discovered in his pyramid indicate that he established an Egyptian navy and sent ships on trading expeditions to Lebanon and the Eastern Mediterranean. He also fought military campaigns against the Libyans in the west, during which livestock and local chieftains were captured. When he died in 2475 BC he became the first Pharaoh to be buried at the new royal cemetery he founded at Abusir, a few miles north of the Saqqara pyramid complex.
