Clara Emily Alexander, 75, of Madison, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at Woodlands Golden Living Center in Newburgh.

She was born April 10, 1934, in Madison, the daughter of Charles Ireland and Nelda Sieferman. While at Madison High School she was a cheerleader for the Cubs when they won the 1950 state basketball championship. She was instrumental in placing the sign commemorating the victory at the entrance to Madison. She worked at the Jefferson Proving Ground before moving to Evansville in 1965. In Evansville she was a furniture consultant for Finke Furniture. After she raised her children, she attended and graduated from the University of Evansville, receiving a liberal arts degree. She returned to Madison in 1988 and became a member of Historic Madison Inc., and served as a tour guide. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Phi Beta Psi. She was a Democratic candidate for the City Council Third District in the 1990s.

She is survived by one daughter, Ginger Mills of Evansville; one son, Billy Joe Alexander Jr. of Evansville; one sister, June Kernen of Madison; two grandsons; one great-grandson; one niece; four nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and her father.

A memorial service was at Lytle Funeral Chapel. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
