Mary Malvina Ward was the second of eighteen children born to of Salmon and Susannah (Proctor) Ward. Somewhere between 1842-1845 most of the family moved to Grant County, Wisconsin from Vermont.
On September 21, 1843 Mary was united in marriage to Horace Cook, son of William and Susan (Crane) Cook,in Lancaster, Grant Co., WI. Horace was born in New York and came to Wisconsin, around 1831, passing through Chicago, IL. He was the first sheriff of Grant County, WI. The family relocated to Richland Co., WI.
Of this union there were seven children born - Judson Albert, William Clinton, Mary Louise, Malinda Jane "Jennie", Horace Nelson, Giles Edgar and Helen Elvira.

Two of their sons enlisted in the Civil War. Judson A. enlisted on October 31, 1861 in Co. D. 11th WI. Vol. Inf., at the age of 16. He was mustered out February 12, 1864. Then re-enlisted on February 13, 1864 and mustered out in Mobile, Alabama on September 04, 1865. Served 3 years, 11 months and 8 days of service. William C Cook enlisted on October 5,1864, with Company I, 12th Wisconsin Volunteers. He died on December 16, 1864 in Savannah, Georgia of disease(chronic diarrhea). He served 2 months and 11 days.

Judson married Alma Dean and had 8 children; Mary Louise married John Savage; Malinda married James Pringle and had 5 children; Horace remained single; Giles married Rosina Burns and had 4 children; and Helen E. married Adam Davis and had 9 children.
