He was the husband of Malinda Jane Cochran (30 Sept 1857, Franklin County, Va./07 March 1933, Summers County, W.Va.), a daughter of Charles Cochran and Ruth Radford.
A Shady Spring history book erroneously lists his name as Christopher Columbus Vest. His birth record is for Columbia, a female.
Columbus and Malinda lived on White Oak Mountain in Raleigh County, W.Va., near the Summers County line. They had four sons, Leonard Haliburton Vest, Sanford Walter Vest, Luther Flemon Vest and Ethiel Barah (E.B.) Vest and a daughter Callie Matilda Vest. Callie married Wriston Richmond.
Note: The 1900 census states that Malinda was the mother of six children with five still living. Five children are listed in the census: Leonard, 17, Luther, 16, Sanford, 10, Callie, 13, and Julius, 4. I believe Julius is actually Ethiel, a known living child who is not listed. The census in question was taken in June 1900 and the ages were based on the next birthday. Ethiel would have been 3 at the time of the census -- four on his next birthday in March 1901.
