Hannah Margaret Smith was born on 29 Mar 1864 in Raleigh County, W.Va., a daughter of Jacob Smith Jr.

Both Hannah and her brother Samuel Smith are frequently listed as children of Jacob Smith Jr. and wife Bathsheba. But there are indications that Bathsheba was not their mother. 1. They were born before the Jacob and Bathsheba's 1865 marriage year. 2. Samuel Smith lists "Priscilla" as his mother on two records. 3. Hannah's father, "Jake," is listed on her death certificate but her mother's name is not. There is a marriage record for Jacob Smith and "Adkins." A search of records for Priscilla, Priscilla Adkins or Priscilla Smith has yielded zero results so far.

Hannah's first husband was Jacob Allen Adkins.

In 1889, she married Albert P. Vest, a son of Jackson Vest and wife Nancy Lilly of West Virginia. Albert was a talented musician and made finely crafted violins, according to niece Nina Vest Bennett Worley.

The 1910 U.S.Census for Jumping Branch, Summers County, W.Va., says that Hannah had seven children, four living.

Mrs. Vest died on 04 May 1947 in Summers County, W.Va.
