He married Betty Jo "B. Jo" Shockey on June 15, 1947. Their children include Kim Brittain, Kathy Jo Brittain Reineke, and Kerry Jo Brittain Rivera. Seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Don lived in Des Moines, Iowa all of his adult life and owned and operated his own contracting company, "Brittain and Son."
Don's funeral was held at First Methodist Church in Des Moines in 1994. Burial followed at Glendale Cemetery In Des Moines.
