Nemesio "Jesse" Varela, 86, died Nov. 27, 2008, in Barstow. He was born Nov. 19, 1922, in Barstow and had lived in Barstow for his entire life.


Nemesio graduated from Barstow Union High School on May 31, 1940. He then joined the U.S. Army in 1942 for three years and was assigned to the 612th Engineering Squadron. He served in the Pacific Theater, in Hawaii, Ellis Island, Marianas Island, and Ryukyus Island. He worked at the Santa Fe Railroad Company for 37 years and was a member of the American Legion #324.


Surviving Jesse are his wife, Guadalupe Varela of Barstow; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Cheryln Varela of Fontana; daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Armond Landavazo of Topeka, Kansas; and brothers and sisters, Henry Varela, Eddie Varela, Mary Cruz Mejia, Esther Torres, Maria Elena Flores, Carmen Rodriguez and Lucia Saiz, all of Barstow; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.


He is preceded in death by his parents, Donaciano and Margarita Varela; and daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" Flores.
