A. J. Anderson of Lindstrom, former state legislator, a businessman at Franconia during the days of the early log boom on the St. Croix River, and known widely throughout Chisago County and the state, died quite unexpectedly at the Bethesda Hospital, St. Paul, Monday morning. He was 71 years old.

His passing was caused by bronchial pneumonia, the illness lasting 9 days.

Mr. Anderson was brought to the hospital on October 10, after he had contracted a cold while attending a convention the same week. Although pneumonia set in it was hoped that he would rally and go through the illness. His heart failed to stand the strain, however, death claiming him shortly before 9 am Monday morning.

August Johan Anderson was born at Ugnanas in Hofmantorp, Sweden, on May 9, 1860. he came with his parents to this country when he was 9 years old.

When a lad of only twelve, he began working on the log boom on the St. Croix. In 1873, when he was but 13 years of age, he got a position in a country store in Franconia where he continued to work until April 1, 1883. he then left on a trip through northern Europe, visiting the home of his birth.

On the return to Franconia, he went into partnership with his former employer in the general merchandise business, continuing until the death of his partner in 1892. he then took a position as manager of the bank at North Branch, which he held for a year and a half.

When only 18 years of age he commenced to show an active interest in politics. In 1890 Mr. Anderson was elected to represent Chisago, Pine, and Kanabec counties in the state legislature. He was re-elected in 1892 and in 1894, serving this state during three terms. Among the measures he helped to have enacted was the bill for the purchase of the tract of land known as the Dalles of the St. Croix which is now the Interstate Park.

Mr. Anderson also was in service in the internal revenue dept of the federal government before moving to Lindstrom. Here the family has since resided.

For a number of years, he engaged in the mercantile business in Lindstrom, before he was appointed inspector of canneries and in 1926 was chosen inspector of canneries and in 1926 was chosen inspector of bottling plant which post he ably filled until his retirement in July of this year.

On October 17, 1888, he was married to Josephine J. Holm, daughter of one of the oldest settlers in Chisago County. He is now survived by his widow, 3 children, 5 sisters, and one brother living. The children are: Mrs. A. J. Oberg, St. Louis, MO, V. Lillian Anderson of Chicago, IL and Verna L. Anderson of Lindstrom.

Since coming to Lindstrom, Mr. Anderson has been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of the Hiram Lofhr, 287, A.F. and A. M. was a member of Lindstrom Camp 3073 at the time of his death and at one time was also a member of the Knights of Pythias order.

Funeral services were conducted at the home in Lindstrom at 1:30 pm today and at Trinity Lutheran Church at 2:30, Rev. M. D. Haferman officiating. Solos were sung by A. F. Oberg and Mrs. A. J. Picotte. Burial was made in the family lot at Kahbakong Cemetery in Taylors Falls with prayer by Rev. M. D. Haferman and rites conducted by members of the local Masonic Order. Pallbearers were: O. W. Helberg, F. R. Victor, Peter Hanssen, E. A. Akerson, Wm. Elfstrand, and R. C. Andrews.

Of Mr. Anderson's life and career, one writer says: “Not only was he interested in his home and family but also in the welfare of the state.

“It is doubtful if the native American residents of Minnesota fully realize how much the development of this state and the entire Northwest owes to the Scandinavia people who left their mother country, linking their fate with the destiny of a growing country. Their citizenship and loyalty to the land. Just such a man was August J. Anderson's.
