Everette Mendel Dean, 84, a faithful servant of church, family, community and country, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in a Florence medical facility after an illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, December 31, in the Pamplico United Methodist Church. Committal services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence.

Mr. Dean was born in Branchville, a son of the late Samuel Earl and Ennis Cook Dean. He was a retired school superintendent, decorated World War II veteran, a lifelong leader in community and civic endeavors and active in Pamplico United Methodist Church. He served as a public school administrator for 30 years, 18 of those years as superintendent of Florence School District No. 2. While serving in this capacity he was recognized for leading the school district through consolidation of the Hannah and Pamplico schools, integration, and the first school district in Florence County to have all schools accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He was a former president of the S.C. Association of School Superintendents and was former chairman of Florence-Darlington Technical College. He was the recipient of the American Association of School Administrators Distinguished Service Award. He served as administrator and coach at Wagener High School, as principal of Brookland-Cayce Elementary School, as administrator of York School District No. 1 and as Superintendent of the Florence County District No. 2 Schools. In 1989 Florence District No. 2 dedicated the E.M. Dean Vocational Education Building in his honor. After retirement he served as an educational consultant. He was a proud graduate of the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the USC Gamecock Club for 53 consecutive years and was the 1999 Florence County Gamecock Club Member Of The Year.

He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. Mr. Dean was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in the European Theatre of Operations, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a member of the 94th Infantry. He earned eight service medals during combat including the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 98. He was an active member of the Pamplico United Methodist Church for 45 years. As a member of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, he was a member of the State Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry, was Chairman of the State Committee on School and Church Relations, was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Methodist Oaks at Orangeburg, was a member of the Standing Rules Committee and was a member of the Florence District Committee on Congregational Development and Redevelopment. He was a lay member of the Annual Conference and was a member of the Administrative Council for Pamplico United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Lions Club for over 50 years, serving in many capacities including president. He formerly served as chairman of the Pamplico Library Board. He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Clyde C. Dean and Fletcher S. Dean.

Surviving are his wife, Margie Crum Dean of Pamplico; two sons, Dr. Everette Mendel "Rette" Dean and his wife, Judy, of Centenary, and Edward Reginald "Reggie" Dean and his wife, Sherri, of Camden; a daughter, Mary "Nealie" Dean Smith and her husband, Mitch, of Florence; two brothers, S. Earl Dean Jr. of Luling, La., and N. Rudolph (Geneva) Dean of Orangeburg; a sister, Dorothy (Stewart) Kennerly of Cordova; and four grandchildren, Josey Lynn Dean of Camden, Charles Everette "Brett" Smith, Coleman Desportes "Cole" Smith and Reed O'Neal Smith, all of Florence.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Pamplico United Methodist Church, 403 East Main St., Pamplico, SC 29583.
